Avril was born on September 27, 1984 in Belleville, Ontario, Canada. She was named Avril (the French word for April) by her father. She was always a musical child, singing in church and in school during her childhood years. Around 14, Lavigne performed at country fairs, singing songs by Garth Brooks, The Chicks and Shania Twain. She began writing her own songs. Her first song was called "Can't Stop Thinking About You", about a teenage crush, which she described as "cheesy cute".
She has been involved in relationships with other musicians. She was married to Deryck Whibley (lead singer of Sum 41) in 2006, but divorced in 2010. She began dating fellow Canadian musician Chad Kroeger (lead singer of Nickelback), in July 2012 after working on her fifth album. They were engaged in August 2012 and married in 2013. On September 2015, Lavigne announced her separation from Kroeger via her official Instagram account, and later they divorced.
Avril Lavigne began dating MOD SUN around March 2021. She collaborated with him on the song Flames which is on the album "Internet Killed the Rockstar" (2021).
In 2002, Lavigne's debut single, "Complicated" and her debut album Let Go became internationally successful, with the album selling 16 million copies worldwide and was the best selling album by a Canadian artist in the 2000s decade. Along with her next hit "Sk8er Boi" - she emphasized a skate punk persona and earned her the title "Pop Punk Queen" from music publications.
Her followup album "Under My Skin" sold 10 million copies worldwide and went to #1 on the Billboard 200 in the US. Lavigne's third album "The Best Damn Thing" features the single "Girlfriend", which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 2007. The song was also her second #1 in her native Canada after "Complicated".
Lavigne's third studio album, The Best Damn Thing (2007), reached number one in seven countries worldwide and saw the international success of its lead single "Girlfriend", which became her first single to reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Her fourth and fifth studio albums, Goodbye Lullaby (2011) and Avril Lavigne (2013), saw continued commercial success and were both certified gold in Canada, the United States, and other territories. In 2019, Lavigne released her sixth studio album, Head Above Water. Three years later, she released her seventh studio album Love Sux (2022).
During the 2000s decade, most critics and publications identified Lavigne's first three albums as a mix of pop punk, alternative rock and pop rock, influenced by a post-grunge sound. Later on in the 2010s, her sound went softer and poppier, characterized more by acoustic pop-rock songs and less loud grungy guitar-driven songs that were the signature of her earlier works. Lavigne stated that the new upcoming album will be a return for her pop punk roots (Love Sux). Read more on Last.fm
